Measuring our progress in the fight against malaria

03152016_Graphic_v1As a large corporation, collecting and evaluating data on our performance is integral to our business. Last month, I discussed ExxonMobil’s 2015 corporate performance, but you might be surprised to learn that we do the same kind of reporting for corporate citizenship activities.

Our annual Corporate Citizenship Report will be released in May, but I wanted to give you a preview of an important focus area for ExxonMobil: the fight against malaria. I just received the data on our Malaria Initiative, and it’s inspiring to see how the programs we support are reaching people across the globe.

Malaria is preventable and treatable, yet hundreds of thousands of people each year succumb to this disease, mostly children under the age of five. Malaria not only robs families of loved ones, but also nations of future teachers, doctors, entrepreneurs, and leaders.

The good news is malaria cases and deaths around the world are on a downward trend thanks to the efforts of governments, international agencies, local organizations, health professionals, and the private sector. As a global company with significant operations in Africa, ExxonMobil has seen firsthand the impact of this deadly disease. That’s why for more than a decade we have been committed to doing our part to help put a stop to it.

In some cases, our initiative has meant working with partners to distribute tools and services to prevent malaria and treat those suffering from the disease. As of 2015, this totaled just shy of 14 million bed nets, more than 2.5 million diagnostic tests, and nearly 3.8 million treatments. In other cases, we invest in programs to train health workers. To date, more than 520,000 health workers have been trained. Since 2000, these and other efforts with our partners have reached more than 125 million people through malaria prevention, treatment, and research programs.

These figures from our malaria program represent the inspiring dividends of our commitment to corporate citizenship as we continue our work to help reduce the global burden of malaria. I will be writing more about our malaria work on World Malaria Day on April 25, and look for our Corporate Citizenship Report to be issued later this spring with more information and stories about the impact of our community investments.
