Baytown expansion “a big win for our whole nation”

I mentioned in a post last week that Rep. Gene Green spoke at our ceremony to celebrate the start of construction of our Baytown, Texas, expansion project. This largest-ever U.S. investment by our chemical division will create jobs, increase tax revenues, and pump nearly a billion dollars each year into the local economy.

It’s worth hearing what Rep. Green, one of the leading Democrats on the Environment and the Economy subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, had to say about the future of the Gulf Coast region thanks to investments like ExxonMobil’s.

Noting the project is the beginning of “a huge expansion literally up and down the Houston ship channel and down to Bayport and Galveston,” the congressman called it “a big win for our whole nation and region.”

He also talked about how different things are today from nine years ago, when Congress passed an energy bill with provisions to fast-track construction of terminals to import liquefied natural gas. Today, as President Obama has noted, the United States is on its way to becoming a net exporter of energy.

As the congressman makes clear, thanks to technologies pioneered by our industry, there is a natural resources revolution underway, and the benefits are being felt all over the country.
