Algae biofuels update

Posted: April 21, 2011 by Emil Jacobs

In the nearly two years since we first announced our alliance with Synthetic Genomics Inc. (SGI), we’ve made good progress in our research aimed at developing next-generation biofuels from photosynthetic algae. Basically, we are working to identify and develop strains of algae that could produce refinery feedstocks for the production of transportation fuels. We also need to design and engineer the systems to do this at scale. It’s a big program, and it will take time.

Today marks one year since the BP Deepwater Horizon blowout and spill in the Gulf of Mexico. It is a sad anniversary, most of all for the families of the 11 men who died in the incident. Our sympathy goes out to them. On this day we also recognize those whose livelihoods, communities, and economies were damaged due to the spill and subsequent moratorium. As those of us in the industry look back, we know that this isn’t the standard by which we operate our business.

Supporting minority students – Securing our future

Across the United States, schools, governments and companies – including ExxonMobil – are investing time and money to encourage students to study math and science and potentially pursue careers in fields like engineering that require these essential skills. When these kids go off to college and major in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM), we know we are making progress. But our efforts can’t stop there.

A Senate committee last week passed legislation that would attempt to allow lawsuits in U.S. courts against any foreign state or cooperative for limiting the production of oil or natural gas. The bill, nicknamed “NOPEC,” targets the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). It’s ironic that the “NOPEC” bill tries to ban the very thing that U.S. energy policy does on a daily basis – limiting production of oil and natural gas supplies.
