Celebrating actions that unite us

Posted: November 21, 2011 by Suzanne McCarron

At a time when the scale of the world’s challenges may seem to divide people, a recent United Nations event provided a welcome opportunity to celebrate the actions that can unite. On Nov. 8, the United Nations Foundation hosted its Global Leadership Awards in New York City. I had the opportunity to attend this event, which brings together leaders from government, industry, and the arts to celebrate cooperative efforts to improve global health and eradicate poverty.

Mobile phones, upward mobility

Posted: September 28, 2011 by Suzanne McCarron

For people in countries such as the United States, mobile phones today are simply fundamental to our way of life. In fact, for many, it’s hard to remember a time without them. While mobile technologies have created new opportunities for social interaction and daily convenience, it is perhaps in business and commerce that they have the potential to make their greatest contribution to society. But when it comes to women’s use of mobile technologies in countries around the world, there’s still a lot we don’t know.

Phil Mickelson on a milestone in education

Posted: August 23, 2011 by Phil Mickelson

Athletes often count success by milestones. For golf and tennis players, it’s winning the Grand Slam; for baseball pitchers, it’s achieving 3,000 strikeouts; for hitters, it’s reaching 3,000 hits (a milestone we just saw Derek Jeter reach). What if we celebrated milestones in education with the same enthusiasm with which we celebrate achievement in sport?

As one of the world’s leading energy companies, ExxonMobil has a clear responsibility to safely and reliably supply the energy that helps meet growing global needs. But our responsibilities don’t end there. Our operations span six continents, and our employees live and work in communities around the world. How we interact with and support these communities is critical to how we measure our performance as a global, corporate citizen.

World Malaria Day: Progress and Inspiration

Posted: April 25, 2011 by Suzanne McCarron

Those who spend time in Africa know all too well the toll malaria takes on people, communities and economies across the continent. This disease kills about 800,000 people a year, most of them children under the age of 5. It accounts for about 40 percent of sub-Saharan Africa’s health expenditures and costs an estimated $12 billion in lost productivity annually. That’s why in recent years, corporations – ExxonMobil included – have stepped up their efforts with NGOs and governments to end deaths from malaria.

Supporting minority students – Securing our future

Posted: April 15, 2011 by Kenny Warren

Across the United States, schools, governments and companies – including ExxonMobil – are investing time and money to encourage students to study math and science and potentially pursue careers in fields like engineering that require these essential skills. When these kids go off to college and major in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM), we know we are making progress. But our efforts can’t stop there.
