Solving our nation’s math and science challenges will require great teachers. But according to the National Academy of Sciences, more than two-thirds of students in fifth through eighth grade are being taught math by teachers without a degree or credential in mathematics. In the physical sciences, this figure is even more alarming – 93 percent.

We want to change that.

Math and science are at the core of ExxonMobil’s business strengths. We employ 18,000 engineers and scientists and 2,000 PhDs. We have a keen interest in increasing proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

That’s why we are teaming up with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to co-sponsor a nationally televised Teacher Town Hall at the historic New York Public Library. The event on Sunday, September 23 will help kick off the third annual NBC News Education Nation Summit.

Moderated by Brian Williams, the town hall will bring together more than 350 teachers to consider the most pressing issues facing educators on the frontline of America’s classrooms and allow them to share best practices and solutions.

We are delighted that an ExxonMobil engineer, Brandi Burns, has been asked to provide opening remarks.
