Today, we posed a question on the front page of the Wall Street Journal: How much of a gallon of gas is lost to heat, friction and other factors in a vehicle instead of actually being used to power the wheels? If you haven’t already seen the answer we gave in the ad, you be might be surprised. Your car only uses 20 percent of each gallon of gasoline to actually get you where you want to go — the other 80 percent is lost due to various sources of inefficiency throughout the car.

Caring for Africa

I’d like to thank Ken and ExxonMobil for giving me this opportunity to talk about the role of Africare and the importance of continuing to provide support for development and progress in Africa. Since our founding in 1970, Africare has provided more than $1 billion in assistance and supported more than 2,500 projects in 36 countries.


In the wake of the recent election results, President Obama made some interesting comments regarding the future of energy policy in the U.S. “We’ve got, I think, broad agreement that we’ve got terrific natural gas resources in this country,” the president said in response to a question from the White House press gallery. He continued: “Are we doing everything we can to develop those?” We agree with the president about the promise of U.S. natural gas resources, for a number of reasons.

While news outlets around the country continue to debate the impact of the mid-term elections, I’d like to talk about a topic that was of importance long before political ads dominated TV — and it will continue to be important long after the political analysis of this week’s election ends. That topic is good energy policy.


Fighting poverty through energy

Recently, the International Energy Agency issued an insightful and important report. It was released in conjunction with the United Nations General Assembly annual meeting, and focuses on the role of energy in reducing extreme poverty and meeting other global development goals. Of the many challenges related to energy, I think this one is often overlooked, at least in more developed countries.
